Attendees shared ideas and challenges for state and local governments to better serve their citizens.
The day featured some truly insightful panel discussions between top thinkers and leaders in govtech and state & local governments. In addition, CivStart’s 2019 startup cohort demo-ed some of the most impactful technologies of tomorrow.
PANEL DISCUSSIONS
Critical connections on the most important topics
DATA TO UNDERSTAND PEOPLE & PLACES
Having stronger data to understand residents and the communities in which they reside provides the opportunity for more targeted services and improvements in critical programs. Join us for an honest discussion of the challenges of data collection and analysis, which can improve housing, public safety, transportation outcomes, and more. Panelists include members of state and local teams who are addressing these issues in order to make the future stronger for all Americans.
MEANINGFUL CITIZEN EXPERIENCE
To make citizen engagement meaningful, local leaders and their constituents need to work together to create accessible and trustful methods and solutions for receiving and responding to citizen input. Join us for a discussion of some tips and tools you can implement right away for more inclusive, informed, and sustained engagement. You will hear from city and county innovation leaders on what they have developed to help make government a two-way communication.
INCLUSIVE INNOVATION
Founders at all stages need support, mentorship, and guidance, especially entrepreneurs from underrepresented groups and untraditional hubs. To implement change and produce better outcomes in our communities, we need to make sure we are enabling our entrepreneurs by providing guidance on where to start and resources to help them grow their businesses. Hear from leaders from the Aspen Institute, Govtech Fund, and Marathon Fund on ways you can get involved and build strong supportive ecosystems.
"The panel discussions were great. The demos of the startups were interesting...the whole day helped to inspire me to level up and get on my seed round so I can grow like I think I should."

DON'T LET 'SMART CITY' BUZZWORDS CONFUSE PEOPLE, IT LEADERS SAY (STATESCOOP)
According to a panel of officials at a technology summit in Washington D.C. on Thursday, the sales tactics behind “smart cities” products became transparent early in their searches for new technologies, but it can still be difficult to convey the purpose of a new civic tool to constituents when buzzwords dominate the conversation.
